The Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans are moving forward in their week of preparation ahead of Sunday’s opener. However, the Colts remain without two key players: wide receiver Josh Downs and kicker Matt Gay.

Here’s the midweek injury report for both teams ahead of the start of the regular season.

THURSDAY

Downs remains sidelined after suffering a high ankle sprain a month ago, but told reporters Thursday he feels “very close” to returning to action after recently starting to run routes again, but his stats for Sunday are still “up in the air.”

In Downs’ absence, rookie AD Mitchell has taken the lion’s share of snaps in the spot, though we’ve also seen the Colts move Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce from the outside to the slot. Fellow rookie Anthony Gould has also received reps in the slot.

If Gay can’t play, undrafted rookie Spencer Shrader will be the choice against Houston.

The injury report is pretty lenient for the visiting Texans, who didn’t call star defensive end Will Anderson Jr. after he struggled with an ankle injury for most of the preseason. Stewart, a backup safety, is the only name to miss practice time this week.
