Schools across the state on high alert; Nelson County increases patrols

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – Schools across Virginia are on heightened alert following the Georgia school shooting, and some districts are taking extra precautions to keep students safe.

Nelson County is among those taking action to increase patrols around schools.

Nelson County Sheriff Mark Embrey told WDBJ7 that while school police officers (SROs) are already deployed to all four schools in the county, additional patrols have been added to provide parents and students with peace of mind.

“We want to have a presence on the property and in the parking lots to assure families, staff, the public school system and the community that we are nearby if needed,” said Sheriff Embrey.

He said student safety is the department’s top priority, underscoring the seriousness of threats against schools.

“Making threats, whether a student thinks they are funny or not, is a serious matter and will be treated accordingly,” Embrey said.

Nelson County isn’t the only county stepping up its security measures. Roanoke City Public Schools reminded parents of its strong partnerships with the Roanoke Police Department and Sheriff’s Office. All city schools have SROs on site, and staff regularly review emergency response plans to ensure they are prepared for any emergency.

Roanoke County Public Schools is also beefing up its safety protocols. SROs are in place at all high schools and middle schools, and every elementary school will have an officer on site by October. In addition, school staff are being trained to assess threats and respond to emergencies using a “run-hide-fight” approach.

Virginia law requires all schools to conduct annual evacuation drills to ensure students and staff are prepared in the event of a crisis.
