Near-record heat forecast for Phoenix today continues First Alert Weather period

Near-record heat forecast for Phoenix today continues First Alert Weather period

PHOENIX (AZ family) — Today will likely be the hottest day of the week in the Valley and the state.

In Phoenix, the temperature will rise to 114 degrees this afternoon, which is 11 degrees above average for this time of year and only one degree below today’s record high of 115 degrees.

An excessive heat warning is in effect today and tomorrow, expiring Friday at 8:00 p.m. Both days are also First Alert Weather Days.

A strong high over Southern California is bringing warmth, along with drier air moving into Arizona from the north. That means the chances for a storm are especially slim in Arizona today.

As high pressure is expected to move into northern Arizona tomorrow, an easterly flow of air and moisture will return to the state. This increases the chance of thunderstorms Friday and into the weekend in the higher elevations of Arizona. The Valley will likely remain dry, but temperatures will be a bit cooler through the weekend, near 108.

More warmth is expected next week, with above-average highs near 108-109 on Monday and Tuesday, and 110 expected again next Wednesday. We are looking at a chance of cooling and a potential higher chance of precipitation next weekend, but that is a long way off. We will update as we get closer.
