What You Need to Know About 2 Students, 2 Teachers Killed in Georgia School Shooting

WINDER, Ga. — A 14-year-old Georgia high school student has been charged as an adult for using an assault rifle to kill two students and two teachers in the hallway outside the classroom where he taught algebra, authorities said.

The shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, about an hour’s drive from Atlanta, was the latest in dozens of school shootings in the U.S. in recent years, including notably deadly ones in Newtown, Connecticut; Parkland, Florida; and Uvalde, Texas.

Here’s what we know about the victims of Wednesday’s shooting:

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, were murdered. Math teacher Christina Irimie, 53, was also killed.

Richard Aspinwall, 39, taught math and was the school’s defensive coordinator for the football team. Head coach Mike Hancock told the Athens Banner-Herald that Aspinwall was a wonderful man and father who loved his daughters and wife, loved football and was respected.

“He was kissing like crazy,” Hancock said. “He trained old-school, but he loved those kids.”

Jay Garcia, a third-year student at Apalachee High School and former football player, attended a prayer vigil Wednesday at Winder Park in the city center to honor the memory of a coach and teacher who helped him a lot, both in his learning of football and in life.

“You can’t bring back the dead,” Garcia said. “I understand that some people won’t be here tomorrow, but never forget who they are and what they meant to you.”
