Georgia high school shooting: Authorities identify 2 teachers, 2 students as homicide victims

Authorities have identified the four people killed in a shooting at a Georgia high school Wednesday morning when a student opened fire inside the school building.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Director Chris Hosey said two 14-year-old students and two teachers were killed in the shooting.

Hosey identified the two students killed at Apalachee High School as Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. Hosey said math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie were also killed in the shooting.

Mason Schermerhorn

According to Channel2Now, Schermerhorn, who suffered from autism, is suspected of drifting away from school after leaving school.

Friends of Schermerhorn’s mother told the New York Times that he was known for having an “optimistic outlook on everything.” He was cheerful and enjoyed reading and playing video games, the people said in the interview.

Richard Aspinwall

One of the teacher victims, Aspinwall, was also a football coach at the school.

“Coach Aspinwell was one of the kindest teachers I’ve ever met. He always let me know if I needed help, he was there for me,” the student wrote in an Instagram tribute.

“He was so funny, talked proudly about his wife and kids, and showed all his students that he cared about them,” the post continues.

Authorities on Wednesday identified Colt Gray, now 14, as the shooter who killed two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School. Gray surrendered to authorities and was arrested after the attack.

Christian Angulo

Christian Angulo, 14, was also killed. Fox 5 Atlanta reported that his schoolmates described him as funny and pleasant to be around. One student, who said he was longtime friends with Angulo, said he was ‘in denial’

Lisette Angulo identified herself as Christian’s older sister on a GoFundMe page that raised more than $50,000 for his funeral.

“He was a very good kid, very sweet and caring. He was so loved by so many. His loss was so sudden and unexpected. We are truly heartbroken. He truly did not deserve this,” she wrote on the page.

Christina Irimi

Math teacher Christina Irimie was also named among those killed. Her students described her as patient and caring, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

An AR-style weapon was used in the shooting, Hosey said.

“Further to the recently issued Joint Statement, the individual identified as a 13-year-old is the same individual in custody in connection with today’s shooting at Apalachee High School,” the FBI said.

Investigators are still trying to determine if anyone was particularly targeted, but they are not aware of any known connections between Gray and the victims.

“Within minutes, law enforcement officers arrived on scene, as well as two school security officers assigned to the facility,” Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told reporters during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

According to Smith, Gray will be charged with murder and prosecuted as an adult.

Authorities said there is no evidence to suggest any other shooter was involved in the shooting, and investigators are actively seeking tips from potential associates of the shooter.

GEORGIA HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING: BIDEN CONDEMNS ‘MORE SENSELESS GUN VIOLENCE’

A joint statement from the FBI Atlanta Field Office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said the National Threat Operations Center received an anonymous tip about online threats about a possible school shooting in May 2023.

Agencies reported that the threats included images of weapons.

Within 24 hours of receiving the anonymous tip, investigators determined the threats were coming from Georgia and referred the matter to the sheriff’s office.

“The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office located the potential perpetrator, a 13-year-old male, and interviewed him and his father,” the FBI said. “The father stated that he had a hunting gun in the home, but the perpetrator did not have free access to it.”

Agencies said the boy denied making the threats and authorities notified local schools to monitor the child.

“At this time, there was no probable cause to make an arrest or take any additional law enforcement action at the local, state or federal level,” the FBI said in a statement.

Gray was arrested and is currently being held at the Barrow County Detention Center.

Authorities said three officers were at the school today when the shooting began and managed to make contact with the shooter, who immediately surrendered.

The other shooting victims are expected to recover, and the Barrow County Sheriff says no fatalities are expected at this time.
