Man seriously injured in shooting in San Francisco’s Mission District

SAN FRANCISCOA man was shot and seriously wounded in San Francisco’s Mission District on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The San Francisco Police Department said officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 2000 block of Mission Street at 8:32 p.m. The incident occurred near the BART station at the intersection of 16th and Mission Streets.

It was there that the victim was found with a gunshot wound.

The unidentified victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police did not reveal what led to the violence.

The recent shooting death of 49ers Ricky Pearsall has once again put security in San Francisco in the spotlight. In the immediate aftermath of the high-profile shooting, police presence in Union Square has been increased. Some say that with so many officers concentrated in the shopping district, security in the area is being neglected.

“We’re providing services to the entire city,” San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said Wednesday at the 10th annual Chinatown Night Out in Portsmouth Square. Scott acknowledged the heavy police presence in Union Square and said “we’re moving officers.”

At the same event in Chinatown, Mayor London Breed responded to criticism that the city’s response to the Pearsall shooting was due to his fame.

“We have one of the lowest crime rates, one of the lowest violent crime rates that we’ve ever had,” Breed said of San Francisco. “Our investigators … do their job, they make arrests, and then our district attorney files charges. I don’t think it’s fair to say that. These crimes just don’t get the same media attention.”

There was no further information about the Mission shooting. No arrests were made.
