Tragic end for Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei after brutal attack by her husband

Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan long-distance runner, has tragically died following a horrific attack that left her hospitalized in Kenya.

According to Kenyan health authorities, the 28-year-old marathon runner died of complete organ failure.

Her death shocked the athletics community and cast a dark shadow over what had already been a difficult year for her.

Earlier this week, few people outside the distance running world might have been familiar with Cheptegei’s name, despite her impressive athletic career.

She recently represented Uganda at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, finishing 48th in the women’s marathon, a grueling 42-kilometer race that challenges even the toughest athletes.

Cheptegei was part of Uganda’s 25-person Olympic squad, a feat that catapulted her into the international spotlight after years of hard work and dedication.

Ahead of the Olympics, Cheptegei also caused a sensation at the 2021 IAAF World Mountain Running and Cross-Country Championships, held in 2022 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

In this competition she won gold in the uphill and downhill race, demonstrating her versatility in various running disciplines.

Her achievements were a source of pride for Uganda, a country that has produced many world-class athletes.

But on Sunday afternoon, Cheptegea’s life took a tragic turn. It happened in the western county of Trans Nzoia in Kenya, where she lived.

She was brutally attacked in her home by her partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach.

According to police reports, Marangach allegedly broke into Cheptegea’s home while she was at church.

A violent confrontation ensued during which Marangach set Cheptegei on fire in an attack that proved fatal.

Both Cheptegei and Marangach suffered serious burns, but he survived and she did not.

The reasons behind the attack are still under investigation, but the incident has highlighted the problem of domestic violence in the region, particularly involving influential figures.

The death of Rebecca Cheptegei is brutal proof of how many women are at risk, even those in public.

Her tragic end has sparked calls for justice and better protection for women not only in Uganda but across East Africa, where gender-based violence remains a widespread problem.

Cheptegei moved to Kenya to pursue her athletic career, a common practice among East African distance runners.

Known for producing some of the world’s best marathon runners, Kenya has long been a training ground for athletes from around the world.

Ugandan athletes like Cheptegei often travel to Kenya to take advantage of high-altitude training opportunities and learn about the country’s many successes in long-distance running.

Her untimely death plunged her home country into mourning, as well as the entire sports community.

Ugandan officials, fellow athletes and international sports organisations expressed their sadness and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of her death.

As Uganda and the world of athletics come to terms with the loss of a talented and promising athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei’s legacy will be remembered not only for her achievements on the track, but also for the painful lesson her death taught about the ongoing scourge of domestic violence.
