An elementary school in Wayland was evacuated on the first day of the school year after an inert grenade was found on the campus, officials said.

Wayland police said officers and Wayland firefighters responded around 3:23 pm on Tuesday for a report that a metal object resembling a grenade was found by a student. At the scene, first responders set up a perimeter around the school, which evacuated students and faculty members participating in after-school programs.

The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad responded and determined the object was an inert World War II grenade and took it away, according to police.

Police said there is no danger to the public and that the incident remains under investigation.
