Man sentenced to 14 years in prison for raping homeless woman in Northeast Portland

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A Portland man has been sentenced to 14 1/2 years in prison for the 2022 rape and abuse of a homeless woman in the Parkrose neighborhood, the Multnomah Co. District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

In the early morning hours of June 19, 2022, officers responded to the area of ​​Northeast 115th Avenue and Northeast Sumner Street after a woman reported she had been raped.

According to court documents filed on June 21, 2022, a woman told police that a man living in an RV near Northeast Marx Street held her captive in his RV, where he physically and sexually assaulted her.

Based on the man’s description and DNA evidence from a rape kit collected at the hospital, police identified 39-year-old James Earl Griffin Jr. as the suspect.

On June 13, 2024, a Multnomah County jury found Griffin guilty of:

  • Two counts of first-degree rape.
  • Two counts of first-degree sodomy.
  • One count of first-degree sexual harassment.
  • One count of fourth-degree assault.
  • One case of coercion.

The jury found Griffin guilty NO guilty of two counts of first-degree kidnapping.

On Wednesday, Judge Cheryl Albrecht sentenced Griffin to 175 months in prison. He will be transferred to the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
