A 14-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of his 80-year-old grandfather Bhim Kohli.

The CPS said Mr Kohli was attacked on Sunday as he walked his dog in a park in Leicestershire.

Andrew Baxter, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor at the CPS, said: “The CPS has reviewed the evidence from Leicestershire Police and has approved the charging of a 14-year-old boy with murder in connection with the death of Bhim Sen Kohli.

“The General Prosecutor’s Office reminds all interested parties that criminal proceedings are underway against the accused and that the young man has the right to a fair trial.

“It is extremely important that there are no reports, comments or sharing of information online that could prejudice these proceedings in any way.”

The boy will appear before Leicester Youth Court on Thursday morning.

Mr Kohli’s family had previously described him as a “loving and caring” person.

In a statement issued by the police force, they said: “Bhim was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was also a son, brother and uncle.

“He adored his grandchildren with all his heart and loved spending time with them. He truly was such a loving, caring person whose life revolved around his family.

“Bhim loved to laugh. He was always very happy and talkative, the joker of the family and always liked to outsmart us with his smile.”

Leicestershire Police said a post-mortem examination revealed Mr Kohli died from a neck injury and further tests were needed.

On Tuesday, four other children – a girl aged 14 and a boy and two girls aged 12 – were arrested on suspicion of murder.
