FOXBORO — The Patriots announced Wednesday that they will wear their fan-favorite red uniforms twice this season.

When will the Patriots wear retro uniforms?

New England will wear red uniforms and white “Pat Patriot” helmets in Week 6 against the Houston Texans and in Week 13 against the Indianapolis Colts. Both games will be played at Gillette Stadium.

The game against the Texans is scheduled for October 13 while the flashbacks will be shown against the Colts on December 1.

Thanks to a NFL rule requiring teams must wear the same helmets throughout the season, the Patriots had to pause their comebacks from 2012 until their return in 2022.

Since the rule was lifted, the Patriots have been wearing red uniforms. twice every season.

The origin of the “Pat Patriot” logo

Massachusetts Cartoonist Phil Bissell created the Pat Patriot logo shortly after learning that Boston’s new football team would be called the Patriots.

Bissell, who died in January, designed the logo in just 45 minutes. He was paid $100 for his work, and his artwork was also featured on the covers of game programs in the 1960s.

The Patriots Hall of Fame featured Bissell’s work in an exhibit titled “The Birth of Patriot Pat.”

New England opens its season Sunday at 1 p.m. on WBZ-TV when the Patriots travel to face the Bengals. It won’t be an easy start to the season for New England, which opens with three of its first four games on the road.
