22 convicted but not executed under the 2017 Act of Parliament on the death penalty for rape

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The West Bengal Assembly passed an anti-rape bill on Tuesday, drawing attention to a similar law that prescribes death penalty for rape that has been in force in Madhya Pradesh for the past seven years. While 22 people have been convicted under the act, none have been sent to the gallows. In fact, the state has not recorded any death by hanging since 1997.

In fact, the aforementioned law was passed in the Winter Session of the Assembly in 2017. The bill proposes the death penalty for the rape of girls under the age of 12. Forty-one people have been convicted under this law in the state. However, their sentence has not yet been carried out. About 22 people have been convicted of rape and murder. In addition, 22 cases of kidnapping, rape and murder are pending before the Minnesota Supreme Court and the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Three convicts approached the Supreme Court after their mercy petition was rejected by the President. In Madhya Pradesh, the death penalty can be carried out only in Jabalpur and Indore.

The Last Hanging

Kamta Prasad Tiwari was hanged in Jabalpur jail on May 27, 1997. He stabbed to death an eight-year-old girl and raped her.

2012: Devendra, Jitendra and Ketan kidnapped a 5-year-old girl in Indore. They raped and killed the girl. After the President rejected their mercy petition, they approached the court. Their curative petition has been pending since 2017.

2019: Man from Piplod in Ratlam raped and strangled his six-year-old daughter. HC confirms death sentence.

2018: Rabbu along with a minor raped a minor in Bhangarh in Sagar. Later they burnt the victim alive. The Supreme Court confirmed the death penalty.
