A severe weather warning was issued Wednesday morning due to fog in parts of Pennsylvania.

The National Weather Service issued a report of fog that continued until 8:30 a.m. in Northern Clinton, Northern Centre, Southern Centre, Northern Lycoming, Southern Clinton and Southern Lycoming counties, as well as Warren, McKean, Potter, Elk, Cameron, Clearfield, Cambria, Blair, Huntingdon, Somerset, Bedford, Fulton, Franklin, Tioga, Sullivan, Union, Snyder, Montour, Northumberland, Columbia, Perry, Dauphin and Cumberland counties.

“Patchy valley fog will reduce visibility to less than a mile in some areas this morning. The fog is expected to clear by 9 a.m. or soon after. Be prepared for areas of reduced visibility on your morning commute. Use low beams and leave plenty of room between vehicles,” the weather service said.

Fog safety: advice from weather services for safe travel

If you must drive in fog, remember these safety rules:

Moderate your speed:

  • Slow down and allow more time for your journey to arrive at your destination safely.

Visibility matters:

  • Make sure your vehicle is visible to others by using your low beams, which automatically activate your rear lights. Use your fog lights if your vehicle is equipped with them.

Avoid traffic lights:

  • Avoid using high beam headlights as they cause blinding effects and reduce visibility on the road.

Keep your distance:

  • Maintain adequate distance to account for sudden stops or changes in traffic patterns.

Stay in your lane:

  • To stay in the correct lane, follow the lane markings on the road.

Visibility close to zero:

  • If visibility is reduced to zero due to heavy fog, turn on your hazard warning lights and find a safe place, such as a nearby company car park, pull over to the side of the road and stop.

Limited parking options:

  • If there is no parking space, pull your vehicle as far to the side of the road as possible. Once stopped, turn off all lights except hazard warning lights, apply the emergency brake and release the brake pedal to ensure that your tail lights are not on, reducing the risk of other drivers colliding with your stationary vehicle.

By following these weather service recommendations, you can drive more safely on foggy roads, reducing the risk of accidents and taking care of your well-being.
