Peshawar: Unknown gunmen on Wednesday shot dead a policeman in Pakistan’s restive northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The policeman, identified as Waqar Ahmed, was shot dead near his home in Nawarkhel village in Lakki Marwat district bordering Afghanistan. He died on the spot and his body was shifted to a hospital for autopsy.

The attackers managed to escape. A police team rushed to the scene, cordoned off the entire area and launched a manhunt to arrest the accused.

On Tuesday, more than 60 Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan terrorists attacked a border guard checkpoint in the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region but were repelled by security forces who killed two militants, officials said.

Terrorists, affiliated with the Muslim and Amjad groups of the Pakistani Taliban, attacked the Marghan checkpost in Kurram district, which borders Afghanistan, sources said.

The terrorists, who numbered over 60, were armed with sophisticated weapons, they said. A fierce gun battle ensued between the security forces and the terrorists, in which two militants were killed.
