SEE Aruppukkottai woman DSP attacked by protesters in Virudhunagar 4 arrested

A female deputy superintendent of police (DSP) was attacked by protesters while trying to disperse a road blockade near Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. A video of the incident emerged showing protesters dragging DSP Gayatri by her hair, drawing widespread condemnation. In response, the police arrested four people involved in the attack and are conducting further investigations.

The incident took place during a protest in Aruppukkottai, Virudhunagar district, where protesters had gathered to demand immediate arrest of the culprits behind the murder of a local truck driver, Kalikumar. The driver, a resident of Perumal Devan Patti in Ramanathapuram district, was attacked by a gang of four men armed with scythes while he was driving a truck near the Kethanayakkanpatti junction on the Thiruchuli-Rameswaram road, according to a report by ABP Nadu. Kalikumar succumbed to his injuries while being taken to a hospital. The gang also fled the scene.

Following his death, Kalikumar’s relatives and supporters gathered at the Aruppukkottai government hospital demanding justice. The situation escalated when they tried to block the Aruppukkottai-Thiruchuli road, according to the report. DSP Gayatri, who was leading a team of police officers monitoring the protest, was brutally attacked when protesters grabbed her by her hair and attacked her.

The altercation led to a scuffle between the police and protesters, creating a tense atmosphere in the area. Despite efforts by the police, the large crowd could not be dispersed, causing traffic disruption on Thiruchuli Road. The situation remains volatile, with protesters continuing to sit in defiance of police orders.

Meanwhile, in June 2024, a policewoman was chased and attacked by her husband. The policewoman who was attacked was identified as Dillirani of Vishnu Kanchi police station.
