One dead after police chase into stolen vehicle in Radford

RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ) – One person was killed Saturday during a pursuit of a stolen vehicle in Radford, the Radford Police Department said.

Police said officers received reports of an armed robbery that occurred at 9:07 p.m. at 1102 West Main Street. The victim reported that his vehicle had been stolen.

According to police, the car was found 40 minutes later in the parking lot of the Sonic on West Main Street, where the driver fled, sparking a police pursuit.

Police say the pursuit took place from Main Street to Radford Road and ended when the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deployed spike strips before the vehicle entered Christiansburg.

The suspect’s car then struck a car travelling in the left lane on Radford Road and then collided head-on with another car.

Police said one of the passengers in the second car hit by the suspect was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the stolen vehicle was treated at the scene by emergency medical services but died from his injuries.

The suspect’s identity has not been released. Virginia State Police are investigating the incident.
