Metro Alabama Crime Stoppers Calls Tips After 6 Shots, 3 Killed in Bessemer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Bessemer police are investigating after six people were shot over the weekend. The first shooting happened late Friday evening on 4th Avenue when three men were shot and killed. Police have arrested a man in the case while they search for persons of interest.

Three more people were shot Sunday night on 9th Avenue North. Investigators say at least two of the victims have life-threatening injuries.

Metro Alabama Crime Stoppers Director Bob Copus says shootings like those Friday and Sunday night are unfair to the community

“It should be a fun weekend with your family. It shouldn’t be a time when you’re afraid to leave your house. You pull into a gas station to fill up with your daughter, your mother and your close friend and then all of a sudden these guys pull up and shoot at each other, but they don’t shoot at you, but they don’t care if any of those bullets hit you,” Copus says. “You get hit, and that’s what it is, and you say, no, that’s not what it is.”

Copus says criminals cannot afford to behave like this, but adds that to change the ongoing trend of violence we are witnessing, we should work with the police or crime fighters and share our knowledge.

“People need to speak up. You know who was involved in this case and now they’re being targeted. Even though it’s a holiday, the crime stoppers haven’t stopped. We’ve had a lot of tips on different crimes today alone,” Copus says.
