Woman killed in weekend shooting in Mid-City identified as mother of four

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A New Orleans woman who was killed early Sunday morning (September 1) after her group was shot following a fight at a Mid-City nightclub has been identified as a mother of four.

Trina Francis told Fox 8 the woman who was murdered was her 29-year-old daughter, Raven Marie Francis, who has four children ranging in age from 6 months to 10 years old.

New Orleans police said Francis and four other women were involved in a fight with another person or group during a night out, and that all five were shot when someone opened fire on their vehicle. The group was attacked as they were leaving the Shamrock Bar & Grill in the 4100 block of South Carrollton Avenue. Police said the women hit a fire hydrant and overturned their car near the intersection of South Solomon and Baudin streets while trying to escape.

Francis died later at the hospital. The conditions of the other four women were not previously disclosed. New Orleans police have not announced an arrest or identified a suspect in the shooting.

But Trina Francis disputed the police story on Monday (September 2), telling Fox 8 that only four women were injured — three of her daughters and their friend. She said Raven Francis was shot in the head and died, and one of her sisters was wounded in the arm. The other two were injured not in the shooting but in the crash of the overturned car.

“(Raven) don’t be like that on the street and she just went out that night and lost her life because of someone else’s problems. My child didn’t deserve that at all,” Trina Francis said.

Just two months earlier, on July 13, two other women were shot in the Shamrock parking lot, according to the NOPD.

“They really need to have better security around here, just in the area and with the crowds. There’s too many things popping up,” said Jaelyn Dorothy, a resident of the area.

Trina Francis said Raven would have turned 30 next month. Now she is pleading for whoever was responsible for killing her daughter to turn themselves in.

She said she wants her grandchildren to remember good times with their mother, such as activities and trips together.

“Raven was a good mother. She did everything she had to do for her children,” Trina Francis said. “They’re going to miss her so much. She was so special to them. All I can do is hug them and tell them everything’s going to be OK. Mommy’s OK. Mommy’s going to be OK.”

She said Raven had recently bought a new truck and started working as a security guard. She called her daughter sweet and outgoing, saying she liked to have fun, had expensive tastes and a heart of gold.

“She’s Hollywood. She’s my Hollywood girl. She loved to have her makeup on, her hair done,” Trina Francis said. “She loved to hang out with her sisters. They were her best friends.”

Her best friends were with her until the very end.

“It’s going to be tough. But with the help of God, family and prayers, we’ll get through this,” Trina Francis said.

Dorothy said she wants people to calm down, be careful with their alcohol consumption and put their guns away.

“Be careful. Don’t be quick to react,” Dorothy said. “You don’t know what someone else has or what they’re going through.”
