Ugandan marathon runner attacked in domestic dispute

Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegui, who competed in the Paris Olympics last month, suffered severe burns over 75 percent of her body in an alleged attack by her boyfriend, local media reported on Monday.

Cheptegui is in critical condition in a hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, following the incident on Sunday afternoon, Kenyan and Ugandan newspapers report.

Trans Nzoia County Police Commissioner Jeremiah Ole Kosiom told The Star that Cheptegui’s boyfriend, Daniel Ndiema Marangach, was also burned in what was described as a domestic dispute. Cheptegui, who is 33 and ranked 44th in Paris, owns a house in Kenya where she trains. Authorities are currently investigating the attack.
