Katie Holmes and Mary-Margaret Humes pay tribute to Dawson's Creek and Stargate SG-1 star Obi Ndefo after his death at 51

This week there was news that Stargate SG-1 AND Dawson’s CoveObi Ndefo has died at the age of 51. The first person to share the news was his sister, who broke the news that her beloved “younger” brother had died a few years after a car accident in 2019 that left him with the loss of both his legs.

Nkem Ndefo shared a photo of her brother on Facebook and wrote a message, although the cause of death has not yet been revealed.

I am devastated by the loss of my little brother and know that he is finally at peace.

My first memory of Obi Ndefo comes from Stargate SG-1 where he played Rak-nor, a member of the Free Jaffa Nation who had ties to the main character Teal’c. I first watched the series on DVD in the early 2000s, but the actor recently came back onto my radar after I started watching TV series Dawson’s Cove.

But for Holmes, the ties were anything but loose. Ndefo was an integral part of her adolescence. He played quite a large role in the first season of the hit teen series (after replacing George Gaffney, who played Dawson’s Cove pilot) when Holmes was still a teenager. He would have had scenes with her quite often, as his character was dating Joey’s sister on the show, Bessie Potter. (The two were in an interracial relationship, which was considered taboo by some characters on the show at the time.)

Holmes recalled in her Stories the time she worked with Obi Ndefo, a young Yale graduate who was then playing his most important television role. (He later appeared in six episodes Stargate SG-1 and in several guest roles in programs such as NCIS: Los Angeles, West Wing AND NYPD blue). Holmes called her former co-star “gorgeous,” also sharing a photo from the show on her Instagram account.

Also, the show’s leading lady, Mary-Margaret Humes (who plays Dawson’s mother, Gail), paid tribute to the actor. Instagramcalling him part of her “TV family.” She also wrote:

These words don’t come easy 💔 It’s hard for me to fathom that you’ve left us, my dear friend. You have always been and always will be a bright, shining light. What an example of pure, unfiltered love and perseverance you’ve set as you navigated the challenges of life these past few years. I will cherish all of our messages of love and support for each other over the past few years. Rest in peace, sweet warrior. 🙏🕊️❤️💫

Several years ago, Ndefo was in a car accident that cost him both of his legs. The accident was caused by a drunk driver who fled the scene outside Erewhon Market in Los Angeles, where he was grocery shopping after a yoga class. The drunk driver hit him as he stood next to his vehicle, and a bystander stayed with him until an ambulance arrived, according to an NBC report at the time.

At the time, he kept himself positive, telling the media, “I can do this. And I want to continue to be a creator in the world,” and later said he held no anger over the incident. He founded the Arts Alliance for Humanity in the Los Angeles area and worked in the Los Angeles community for many years, including as an actor.
