Driver who caused a hit-and-run accident allegedly hit a mother and child, ruining their escape

A driver who allegedly hit a mother and her toddler had to be rescued by witnesses after he fell during a failed escape and almost died.

Police said 61-year-old Olubunmi Awoluyi was driving drunk on Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn on Saturday when he crashed his minivan into two parked vehicles, CBS News reports.

He then allegedly turned around, hit a 26-year-old woman and a 3-year-old girl and drove away.

According to police, the child suffered only minor injuries, but when first responders arrived, the mother was unconscious and unresponsive.

Both were taken to a local hospital and were last reported to be in stable condition. They are expected to make full recoveries.

Awoluyi managed to drive several blocks before surveillance footage shows him hitting two parked cars on Blake Avenue, NBC reports.

Surveillance footage shows a minivan speeding down the street hitting the side of a parked Jeep and pushing it onto the sidewalk, overturning onto the driver’s side and striking a parked van before screeching to a halt.

The minivan likely had hood damage before it hit the parked vehicles.

Police said Awoluyi was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Mobile phone footage from the scene shows neighbours working together to help the van stand and save the driver, who was still pinned to his seat.

“(The driver) was bleeding from the mouth. There was blood on the road. It was kind of scary to watch someone get pinned down and crushed,” Eudes James told CBS News.

“When the firefighter opened the door at the scene, a bottle of alcohol fell out,” witness Shanique Fox told the station.

Delivery driver Danny Square told News 4 reporters he followed the driver of a minivan after it hit pedestrians and a car.

“He was drunk because we found three open bottles of Hennessy in his car,” he told the website.
